An Old Cliché Rings True: Exercise and the Aging Process

Aging. The inevitable is upon us. And as the Baby Boomers start to gray, their numbers will dominate the demographic landscape of America.

Science still debates the exact cause of the human aging process, but one theme that resonates throughout the medical community is cliché, however, its implications run deep. That’s right, we’ve all heard this one a thousand times before, but this time we’re really beginning to listen: “If you don’t use it, you will lose it.”

Exercise. Can it stop the aging process? Science has demonstrated that it can definitely slow it down. More importantly, it can help maintain one’s health and, in most cases, reverse the detrimental effects of aging. Among the effects of aging that cause problems for the elderly are the loss of muscle mass and bone mass. How many times have you heard someone say, “I just don’t have the strength to do that anymore.”? Recently, Resistance Training has stepped to the forefront of exercise. Numerous studies have indicated that its effects are far-reaching and that the benefits include:

Increased muscular strength and bone mineral density, lower total body fat, increased metabolism, lower blood pressure, and lower cholesterol. In addition, you will feel better through increased energy levels and an improved physical appearance. Best of all, its never too late to get started!

Getting started. Resistance Training should not be taken lightly (no pun intended). Improper use of weight training equipment or free weights can result in serious injury. The best recommendation is to seek professional advice before beginning a Resistance Training program. First, consult a qualified physician and obtain a complete physical, especially if you have been sedentary for a long period of time. Second, take the information from your physician (especially if it’s written) and find a Personal Fitness Trainer that can help you develop a customized Resistance Training program, and most importantly, set specific personal goals.

So, the time is now. Don’t hesitate to begin improving your quality of life. Take charge of it! Otherwise, you may be on the receiving end of that all too familiar cliché.
